For decades, the RF, microwave, and defense electronics industry has run on relationships built at trade shows, in trade publications, and through rep firm networks. That world hasn’t disappeared. But underneath it, a second, quieter shift has been building for years — and most suppliers still aren’t showing up for it.

Engineers under 40 don’t start product research at a trade show. They start with a Google search, a LinkedIn post, or a recommendation buried in a colleague’s feed. By the time they walk the floor at a show, they’ve often already decided who’s worth talking to.

Three shifts are driving this, and each one has a direct implication for how RF suppliers need to market.

Trade shows are growing, but the research happens before anyone walks the floor

IMS 2026 in Boston drew 8,808 attendees from 53 countries — its strongest turnout in half a decade. Trade shows aren’t dying. But attendance growth is masking a change in how that time gets used. Engineers increasingly arrive with a shortlist already in mind, built from research done weeks earlier.

That pattern isn’t unique to RF. Across B2B industries, buyers now complete roughly 60% of their purchase journey before ever contacting a vendor, and nearly three-quarters of them do more than half their research online before making an offline decision. For component and subsystem suppliers, that means the sales conversation on the show floor is often a formality — the real decision-making happened online, days or weeks before.

If your company only shows up in person, you’re only reaching engineers after they’ve already narrowed the field.

Spec-specific searches carry real commercial intent

Searches like “SMA connector 50 GHz” or “mmWave cable assembly 110 GHz” aren’t casual browsing. An engineer typing a specific frequency, connector type, or tolerance into Google already knows what they need — they’re looking for who can supply it. This is about as close to bottom-of-funnel intent as B2B search gets, and it’s a category most RF suppliers have left almost entirely uncontested.

Web search is now one of the top ways B2B buyers discover new vendors, on par with peer recommendation. In a niche technical field like RF and microwave components, where the buyer pool is small and the specs are precise, that search traffic is disproportionately valuable — and disproportionately easy to win, because so few suppliers are competing for it with real content.

LinkedIn has become a supplier discovery channel, not just a recruiting tool

RF and microwave engineers are on LinkedIn — following component manufacturers, industry commentators, and each other. A well-placed technical post or a colleague’s share can put a supplier in front of a buying committee long before an RFQ ever goes out. That matters more than it might seem: content shared by individual employees now gets roughly 8 times the engagement of the same content posted from a company page, and most B2B purchases today involve four or more stakeholders who each do their own research.

For a supplier, that means LinkedIn visibility isn’t a nice-to-have brand exercise. It’s a discovery mechanism that reaches multiple people on a buying team at once, often before your sales team knows the opportunity exists.

The first-mover advantage is still available — for now

None of this is exotic marketing theory. It’s search engine visibility, LinkedIn presence, and content that speaks the language of the engineers actually specifying parts. What makes it an opportunity right now is that almost no one in RF, microwave, and defense electronics is doing it well. The suppliers who build this presence first — before it becomes standard practice — will be the ones showing up when an engineer searches for a spec, scrolls past a post, or asks a colleague who to call.

The question worth asking inside your company isn’t whether this shift is real. It’s whether your company shows up where engineers are already looking.

  • Audit what comes up when you Google your own product categories with real specs attached — not your company name.
  • Check whether your website content speaks to a specific frequency, tolerance, or application, or just general capabilities.
  • Look at whether your engineers, sales team, or leadership are posting on LinkedIn at all, or whether all your content lives only on the company page.
  • Treat your next trade show as the middle of the buyer’s journey, not the start of it — and market accordingly in the weeks before the show.
